مورينيو's plan to limit interest in Otamendi

FC Barcelona continues to search for a central defender to strengthen their squad in the winter transfer window, especially after Andreas Christensen's injury and the uncertain situation of Ronald Araújo, according to a report by the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

The experienced Argentine defender Nicolás Otamendi, 37 years old and whose contract with Benfica expires at the end of the season, is one of the names that fit Barcelona's requirements to strengthen their central defense. Otamendi is expected to deliver an immediate impact.

However, Portuguese sources reported that coach José Mourinho quickly requested the renewal of Otamendi's contract to prevent his potential transfer to Barcelona during the winter transfer window, a move supported by Benfica's president. The newspaper "A Bola" confirmed that Mourinho emphasized Otamendi's importance to the team and requested the contract extension before becoming aware of Barcelona's interest in the player.

The newspaper also pointed out that Otamendi and his family feel comfortable in Lisbon, which prompted him to renew his contract until 2026 to ensure playing at the highest level and preparing for the World Cup next summer.

Barcelona has until January 15 to submit an official medical certificate to the La Liga committee confirming Christensen's long-term absence, which would allow them to use 80% of his salary to register a new player. However, Benfica is unlikely to make Otamendi's departure easy during the winter transfer window.
