Schlotterbeck Between Staying and Leaving: Matthäus' Advice Opens Door to Speculation
Friday 05-12-2025
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" revealed that the future of German defender Nico Schlotterbeck has become the subject of widespread speculation after he refused to renew his contract with Borussia Dortmund, which runs until 2027. This has made him one of the most sought-after defenders in the transfer market and opened the door for major clubs, including Barcelona, to explore opportunities to sign him.

The newspaper explained that Hans Flick wants to strengthen the left-back position in Barcelona's defense following Iñigo Martínez's departure last summer, and that Schlotterbeck could be an important addition to the team if the club's financial capabilities allow the deal to be completed, despite Gerard Marten still being present in this position.

Sport pointed out that the atmosphere in Germany is filled with many speculations surrounding the German defender. German football legend Lothar Matthäus advised him to think carefully before leaving Borussia Dortmund, emphasizing that the team has a promising project and a strong position in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, and that Schlottterbeck is highly valued within the club.

Matthaus added: "If I were in his place, I would think carefully before deciding to leave. The team has world-class players like Jerasi, Nemisha, Ademi, and Kopil as the goalkeeper, and the rest of the lineup is relatively strong, making staying an important option before considering any other offers."

The newspaper confirmed that Bayern Munich is one of the clubs interested in Schlotterbeck, but Borussia Dortmund's management prefers to sell the player to a foreign club. With a year and a half remaining on his contract, this puts pressure on the club to find a quick solution regarding the player's future before next summer.
