Maresca: This is What We Proved Today, and Caicedo Deserved the Red Card
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca appeared in a press statement following the 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the 13th round clash of the English Premier League at Stamford Bridge.
The coach said in his speech: "Today we proved that we are heading in the right direction. I always repeat the same thing: the performance was excellent. We were the better team when it was 11 against 11, but playing with ten men makes things harder, and despite that, we handled the situation remarkably."
He added: "When we were playing with 11 players, we were better than them. We tried to take advantage of the best solutions and available spaces, and we knew that the spaces would be behind the side where Malo and Estevão were. Tonight, we can come away with a positive feeling even if we don't win."
About the red card that Caicedo received: "I think it was a red card, but what I don't understand is the inconsistency in the standards. What about Bentancur's challenge on Reece James? Why is one considered a red card and the other not? Today, the red card was clear, but why the difference? This is the reality."
He continued: "Moisés Caicedo is always the same spirit. He is a very important player for us, and his desire is always to help the team win."
About the way of playing after the sending off: "We had to double our effort, and that was the most important thing. We didn't change much in our style of play with the ball, and we tried to play through Liam Delap. In the attacking phase, the idea didn't change much."
Regarding the team's level compared to last season, he concluded: "I believe we are better than last season, and we are getting closer to a competitive level. We will see where we stand in February and March, and then we will set our goals."
