Chelsea Ends It All.. Barcelona and Flick's Fall and the Halt of Records
The Spanish newspaper 'Sport' reported that Barcelona's heavy 3-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was not only due to poor performance but also put an end to several positive streaks that the team and coach Hans Flick were experiencing in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona, which had only won once in nine visits to Chelsea's stadium, appeared clearly diminished after the first goal and Araujo's red card at the end of the first half.
The newspaper explained that this loss represents the first match in which a team led by Hans Flick failed to score any goal in the Champions League, and the last time Barcelona left a European match without scoring was in November 2023 when they lost 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk, thus ending the team's second-best scoring streak in the tournament which lasted 22 consecutive matches, while the best streak remains between 2009 and 2012 with 29 matches.
Sport also pointed out that the defeat represents the biggest loss Flick has suffered in his Champions League career, as he only lost one match out of 18 with Bayern Munich before his departure, with 16 wins and one draw, during which he won the Champions League title in 2020. Since taking over Barcelona, Flick has played 19 matches and lost only five, but had never lost by a three-goal margin before facing Chelsea.
The newspaper confirmed that Flick's previous losses included goals conceded in all matches against Monaco 2-1, Borussia Dortmund 3-1, Inter 4-3, and Paris Saint-Germain 2-1, while all his draws ended with high-scoring results against Inter 3-3, Atalanta 2-2, and Club Brugge 3-3. However, at Stamford Bridge, all these streaks stopped abruptly.
