Christensen Returns to His Old Home
Andreas Christensen returns today to Stamford Bridge, the stadium where he developed into one of Europe's top defenders, according to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
The Dane shone with Chelsea after a successful loan spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach, winning every title with the club except the English Premier League, including the 2021 UEFA Champions League victory against Manchester City.
Christensen's transfer to Barcelona was at the direct request of Xavi Hernandez, who convinced him through several communications to leave despite Thomas Tuchel's insistence on keeping him. The coach confirmed before his departure: "We rely on him a lot, and he knows that we value him."
In his first two seasons with Barcelona, Christensen showed impressive performances, playing 40 matches in 2022/2023 and 43 in 2023/2024, the highest number of games in his career. He later adapted to playing as a defensive midfielder due to a lack of options, even though his natural position is center-back.
Xavi's departure was difficult for him, while recurring injuries, especially to the Achilles tendon, led to a decline in his participation under Hans Flick this season. Despite offers from Saudi Arabia, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, and La Liga, the player did not consider leaving, especially with Flick's support. Flick said, "Letting Andreas go would be a big mistake; he is one of the smartest defenders in Europe."
In his farewell message to Chelsea three years ago, Christensen wrote: "After ten wonderful years, I felt it was the right time for a new beginning. The decision was not easy, and I will miss everyone here."
Today, after more than three years, the Dane returns to the stadium where his career began, in a visit that holds a special significance for both the player and his former fans.
