Szczesny Faces a Major Challenge Against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu
The Spanish newspaper 'Marca' reported that Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will face a tough challenge on Sunday against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, as despite his long career, he has never managed to keep a clean sheet against the royal team, whether as a player with Roma, Juventus, or Barcelona.
The newspaper noted that Szczesny has faced Real Madrid six times and conceded ten goals, averaging 1.6 goals per match. His first encounter with Roma was in the 2015/2016 season in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, where the team lost 2-0 at home and 2-0 away. In the 2017/2018 season, he participated with Juventus in the 96th minute after Buffon was sent off, but he was unable to save a penalty taken by Cristiano Ronaldo, and the match ended with Real Madrid winning 3-1.
As for Barcelona, he faced the royal team on three occasions: in the Supercopa de España final, which ended with Barcelona winning 5-2 despite being sent off in the 57th minute and conceding a goal from Mbappé; then in the Copa del Rey final where he conceded two goals from Mbappé and Tchouaméni; and finally in the league match that ended 4-3 in favor of Barcelona at the Montjuïc Stadium, where Mbappé scored a hat-trick.
The current challenge for Szczesny, as noted by 'Marca', is that he has not been able to keep a clean sheet this season in any of the five matches he has played since goalkeeper Juan García's injury, having conceded one goal against Real Sociedad, two goals against Paris Saint-Germain, four goals from Sevilla, one goal against Girona, and one goal against Olympiacos last Tuesday.
Keeping a clean sheet on Sunday is considered an opportunity to break the historical streak against Real Madrid and achieve his first clean sheet this season.
