Laporta Announces the End of the Super League and Return to UEFA
Barcelona President Joan Laporta hinted at the end of the so-called Super League, emphasizing that the club is indeed out of this competition and has started to gradually reintegrate with the European Football Association "UEFA".
Laporta said during the general assembly: "We have now started to return to UEFA, we have worked on building bridges between UEFA and the Super League, and with the new changes in the Champions League system, we have noticed a significant improvement in the shape of the tournament and a 20% increase in revenues."
He added: "Our goal is to calm the situation in European football, we were with the Super League project for specific reasons, but after the positive developments within UEFA, it has become necessary to prioritize reconciliation."
The Barcelona president explained that the club received a warm welcome from UEFA, confirming that dialogue is the way forward, saying: "We are founders in the European Clubs Association, and when I attended the last meeting, I saw a great desire for Barcelona and all Super League clubs, especially Barcelona, to rebuild bridges again."
He continued: "Many of the Super League ideas are now acceptable to UEFA, except for the issue of governance of the tournament, while other matters can be developed from within the European Clubs Association. Even the Unify platform that the Super League was advocating for, UEFA is now open to studying it if it proves its economic viability."
Laporta concluded: "We believe in the possibility of reaching a comprehensive agreement, and it is clear to us that the best place for Barcelona is within UEFA."
