The Free Kick Disaster in Barcelona Since Messi's Departure
Friday 17-10-2025
Since the departure of Argentine legend Lionel Messi from Barcelona, the Catalan team has been facing a real crisis in scoring goals from direct free kicks, according to what was revealed by the Spanish newspaper "AS".

The newspaper reported that Barcelona has only managed to score three goals from free kicks since Messi's departure, who had scored 50 goals from this situation during his time with the team, the last of which was against Valencia in May 2021.

In the 2024/2025 season, Barcelona took 27 free kicks in La Liga, managing to score only once through Pablo Torre against Sevilla, while in the 2023/2024 season, only two goals came from 21 attempts, scored by Ferran Torres against Real Betis and Robert Lewandowski against Valencia.

During the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons, the team failed to score any goals from free kicks, and so far in the current season, they have not capitalized on any of their six attempts.

The newspaper added that Barcelona lacks a player specialized in executing free kicks, despite the attempts of several names such as Raphinha, Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, as well as former players like Memphis Depay, Ansu Fati, and Coutinho, with little success.
