Athletic Bilbao's Official Statement: Stop the Genocide
The Spanish club Athletic Bilbao announced its solidarity with the Palestinian people and its support for refugee children, in a humanitarian move coinciding with its match against Real Mallorca at the 'San Mamés' stadium, which will take place tomorrow, Saturday.
The club confirmed in its statement that it will display the phrase (Athletic stands with Palestine.. Stop the genocide) on the screens of San Mamés stadium before the match tomorrow, which is part of the eighth round of La Liga.
The club added that it will organize a special honoring ceremony on the pitch to honor Hani Thaljiyeh – the former captain and founder of the Palestinian women's national team and the club's ambassador during its 125th-anniversary celebrations – alongside a group of Palestinian refugees in the Basque Country and representatives from the 'UNRWA', who will receive a warm welcome from Athletic fans.
This support comes as part of a project launched by the club's foundation in collaboration with 'UNRWA Eoskawi' this October, aimed at assisting around 8,000 Palestinian refugee children in Syria by providing physical education lessons in 16 schools run by the UN agency.
Details of this project will also be presented at a press conference on October 10 as part of the 'Thinking Football' festival, which will include a special screening of the chapter about Hani Thaljiyeh in the documentary film Les Rebelles du Foot 2 presented by Eric Cantona, followed by a discussion on the initiative to support Palestinian refugees with the participation of club and 'UNRWA' representatives.
Thaljiyeh will also participate in a panel discussion on Saturday evening during the festival's events, following the screening of three short films centered around football and its social role.
Through this initiative, Athletic Bilbao reaffirms its commitment to the values of solidarity and humanity, sending a clear message of support for the Palestinian people and its rejection of genocide, leveraging the influence of football to create a positive impact that transcends the boundaries of the pitch.
