Athletic Bilbao announced the renewal of their defender Yeray Álvarez's contract until the summer of 2028, with an option for an additional season extension. The player's contract was set to expire on June 30 next year, before the club decided to retain his services as part of their project for the upcoming season.

The Athletic management has already started working on preparing the team's roster for the new season, and renewing Yeray's contract is one of the key matters that has been settled early, especially given his extensive experience and important role in the team's defense over the past years.

The journey of the Spanish defender was not easy, as he had previously overcome testicular cancer during one of the most challenging periods he faced, before returning to the field and proving his ability to compete at the highest levels.

Yeray was subjected to a ten-month suspension by UEFA after unintentionally consuming a product belonging to his partner for combating hair loss. Despite all the circumstances, he managed to regain his form and convince the club to keep him on the team for additional years.
