Officially.. Arsenal announces Saliba's contract renewal
The English club Arsenal announced today, Tuesday, that its French defender William Saliba has signed a new long-term contract with the team (until the summer of 2030), continuing his remarkable journey at "Emirates" after becoming one of the key pillars of the defense line.
Saliba (24 years old) joined Arsenal in July 2019, and since then he has played 140 matches in all competitions, becoming an essential part of the team's defensive system.
The French defender began his career with Saint-Étienne, where he progressed through the youth categories before playing his first season with the first team in 2018/2019, participating in 23 matches. After moving to Arsenal, he was loaned back to his former club for the 2019/2020 season and contributed to their reaching the final of the French Cup.
Saliba continued his development on loan at Nice and then Marseille, where he shone brightly and won the award for the best young player in Ligue 1, and was selected in the Team of the Season for 2021/2022.
Since returning to Arsenal, he has played a pivotal role in the defense that conceded the fewest goals in the last two seasons of the Premier League, earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Season for three consecutive years, and was selected in FIFA's best 11 players in the world for 2024.
On the international level, Saliba has worn the French national team jersey since March 2022 and has played 28 matches, starting in all of "Les Bleus" matches in Euro 2024 up to the semifinals, securing his place in the European Championship squad.
Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, said: "We are very happy to renew William's contract. Over the past three seasons, he has become one of the best defenders in the world thanks to his calmness, intelligence, and physical strength. We believe he will continue to develop with us to reach higher levels."
For his part, coach Mikel Arteta commented: "William is loved by everyone at the club, which reflects his character and commitment. He has developed a lot since joining us and has built a strong relationship with the fans. We are confident that the best is yet to come, and we will work together to achieve our great ambitions and win titles."
