Guardiola: We Did Not Play in Our Style, and the Result Was Fair
Sunday 21-09-2025
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola appeared in a press statement after the 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the fifth round of the Premier League.

He said: "We have played difficult matches this week, against Manchester United and then in the Champions League, and today we faced a very strong team."

He added: "I tip my hat to my players for their resilience. It is extremely difficult when you are not effective in high pressing, as building attacks becomes more complicated. We made some attacking transitions, and I think the result is fair. Overall, Arsenal was better."

He emphasized: "Since the end of the transfer window, the cohesion within the team has been at its best. Today's match was very exhausting, and Arsenal has everything. We defended set pieces well; we will accept the point, we need to improve, but that is the situation."

Regarding fatigue and the busy schedule: "We were extremely fatigued. The match against Napoli in the Champions League was very emotional, and after that, we had one day to recover, then four or five hours of travel to London. Arsenal competed with us in the last two races for the Premier League title and reached the semifinals of the Champions League, so it is very difficult. We have a significant amount of fatigue among the players, along with many injuries."

On playing with five defenders, he concluded: "We did not try to play this way, but when the opponent is better, we have to defend deep and rely on counter-attacks, even though that is not our style. I prefer not to do that, but at this level, we have to adapt. We will accept the draw, and in some matches, we need to make tactical adjustments."
