Rafed Salem: Most Iraqi League Clubs Focus on Defense and Lack Offense
Sports analyst Rafed Salem expressed his dissatisfaction with the playing style of most teams in the Iraqi Stars League, confirming that excessive focus on defense hinders the development of Iraqi football and limits the enjoyment of the game.
Salem stated in remarks to the Iraqi News Agency: "Most clubs in the Iraqi Stars League only think about defense, and this is not a true style of football. Beautiful football relies on attack, creativity, and creating opportunities, not just closing down in defensive areas throughout the match."
He added: "We need clubs to adopt the style of the English league, where every team plays to win and always seeks to score goals, while providing attractive offensive performance. This is what keeps the audience engaged and increases the intensity of competition, as well as enhances the level of players in all positions."
Salem pointed out that some clubs have started to change their philosophy and have begun to realize the importance of balance between defense and attack, but the road is still long to reach the level of the English league in tactical thinking and the courage to play openly.
Salem concluded by saying: "Clubs should invest in training their players to read the field correctly and develop their offensive skills, rather than just focusing on countering attacks. Iraqi football has wonderful talents, and they should be better utilized to elevate the level of the league both locally and continentally."
Salem confirmed at the end of his remarks that the future will be better if all clubs adopt the philosophy of offensive and creative play, which will also benefit the national team, as players will become more prepared to face strong teams in international tournaments.
