Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at player Mattis Thiel via social media, following the team's loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup.

Thiel had missed a penalty during the shootout, alongside teammate Mickey van de Ven, after Tottenham squandered a 2-0 lead in the regular time of the match, which ended in a draw.

In an official statement published by the club on Thursday morning, Tottenham said: "We are disgusted by the racist abuse that Mattis Thiel has faced on social media after our defeat in the UEFA Super Cup last night."

They continued: "Mattis showed courage when he stepped up to take the penalty, while the abusers hide behind anonymous accounts to spread their vile opinions."

They added: "We will work with authorities and social platforms to take the strongest possible action against anyone who can be identified; we stand with you, Mattis."

The club reaffirmed its commitment to work with relevant authorities and digital platforms to pursue those responsible for these violations and to take strict actions against them.
