Modric: Milan is a great club, and I want to lead Croatia in the World Cup
Croatian star Luka Modric spoke about the reasons for his joining AC Milan from Real Madrid during the current summer transfer window of 2025, in a free transfer deal for one season with an option to extend for an additional year.
Modric's statements came during the press conference introducing him as a new player for Milan, where he compared the Italian club to his former team Real Madrid and revealed his upcoming goals.
Regarding the difference between Real Madrid and Milan, Modric said: "Certainly, Milan is at the same level as Real Madrid. When I first came here, I immediately saw how big a club it is; everything is of high quality - the organization, the people, the fans, the stadium. You can feel the greatness of the club. Milan has seven European titles and is the second most decorated team after Real Madrid, and that says a lot."
On his transfer to Milan, he added: "I spent 13 years at the biggest club in the world, and now I've come to a club that was previously like Real Madrid, but has lost that level recently. Milan needs to return to its status, and I will do my utmost to help it this season."
Regarding his ambitions with Milan, he continued: "If I was going to leave Real Madrid, I had to move to a big club with high expectations. It is unfortunate that Milan is not participating in Europe at the moment, even though it is the most decorated club after Real Madrid. We have one match a week, and perhaps this will be beneficial for better preparation."
On consulting Ancelotti, he said: "I spoke with Carlo Ancelotti, and he told me everything about Milan. He was here as a player and a coach, and I need to adapt quickly to Serie A. I have played against many Italian clubs; they are very organized and love to compete."
Regarding his physical readiness, he confirmed: "I had a three-week vacation, but I continued to train to be in the best possible shape. I watched the two friendly matches against Arsenal and Liverpool, and I saw positive things regarding the team and the players. I can't wait to join the training and get to know everyone."
On his next goal, he said: "My goal is to be a starter with the Croatian national team in the 2026 World Cup."
