FIFA Sanctions Following the Benfica vs Boca Juniors Match
The International Football Federation announced the suspension of Ander Herrera, Boca Juniors midfielder, for 4 matches in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, following the events of his team's match against Portuguese Benfica.
The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw in the first round of the group stage, was tense, as Herrera was sent off from the bench after protesting to the referee during a video review, according to what was reported by the French newspaper "L'Équipe".
Herrera had exited injured in the 20th minute, but he received the red card later from outside the field.
Herrera was not the only one suspended, as FIFA also decided to suspend his teammate Nicolás Figal for 4 matches due to a violent tackle in the final minutes of the match, while Andrea Belotti, Benfica's striker, received a two-match suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.
It is worth mentioning that Boca Juniors and Benfica are in Group C alongside German Bayern Munich and New Zealand's Auckland City.
