Chelsea target SL Benfica full-back to replace Reece James
Chelsea are targeting a move for Daniel Banjaki, the right-back from SL Benfica, during the upcoming winter transfer window to bolster their squad following the injury to captain Reece James, according to TEAMtalk.
The site noted that Chelsea are keeping an eye on the 18-year-old Portuguese player, alongside Arsenal and Liverpool, after he started to receive more regular opportunities with the first team of SL Benfica this season.
The player has a release clause of around £38 million, equivalent to €45 million, but SL Benfica prefers to keep him and continue developing him. However, they may have to listen to an offer from Chelsea if the club agrees to pay the release clause.
James has undergone minor knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined for up to three months, prompting Chelsea to intensify their interest in strengthening the right-back position. The team also has Malo Gusto and Marco Palystra, while Gusto's future remains open to the possibility of leaving if a suitable offer is received.
Chelsea continue to monitor Jules Koundé, the Barcelona defender, as an alternative option, despite there being no advanced negotiations and Hans Flick's unwillingness to let him leave in January.
Despite Chelsea's priority being to strengthen their midfield this winter, with Alex Scott from Bournemouth being targeted, the signing of a right-back has also become a genuine interest, amid competition for Banjaki from English and European clubs.
