Diyala Opens Fire After Encounter with Al-Zawraa
Friday 09-05-2025
Diyala Sports Club expressed its deep dissatisfaction and strong astonishment at the events that accompanied its recent match against Al-Zawraa Club in the 32nd round of the Iraqi Stars League, emphasizing that what happened has nothing to do with sportsmanship and threatens the principle of justice that must be upheld as the end of the competition approaches.

The club pointed out that the match witnessed "biased" refereeing errors that had a direct impact on the result, in addition to "provocative and unsportsmanlike" behaviors from the opposing team, while the referee limited himself to formal procedures, and one member of the Diyala coaching staff was sent off merely for protesting.

The statement also hinted at alarming indicators related to repeated suspicions in the sports community, including illicit influences or what is known as "buying loyalties," considering that what occurred brings to mind controversial scenarios that Iraqi football experienced two years ago.

Among the most prominent points included in the statement:

  • The referee ignored clear instances of violence from Al-Zawraa players, including an elbow strike in the penalty area.
  • An individual from Al-Zawraa's coaching staff invaded the technical area of Diyala and verbally assaulted the goalkeeper coach without any punishment.
  • Complete disregard for the injuries of Diyala players, and pressure on the goalkeeper to execute the ball without respecting the legal time.
  • Repeated and unjustified use of yellow cards against Diyala players.

Diyala Club demanded the Iraqi Football Association to:

  1. Open an urgent and transparent investigation into the events of the match.
  2. Announce penalties against the referee and publish his name officially, just as is done with players and clubs.
  3. Reassess the referees' committee due to the recurrence of impactful errors in crucial matches.

In conclusion, the club affirmed its commitment to its full rights within legal frameworks, retaining the option for legal and sports escalation both locally and internationally to protect the integrity of football competition in Iraq.
