Rice: Thirsty for Titles, and We Will Come Back Stronger
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice appeared in press statements after being eliminated from the semi-finals of the Champions League, losing to Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg and 2-1 in the second leg.
The player said: "I think we were dominant today; if we had scored one chance in the first 15-20 minutes, the chances of the match would have been greater. We made two mistakes, and they scored two goals. We did our best, but it wasn't meant to be; we could have scored more goals in both legs, but Donnarumma was amazing, and it just wasn't meant to be."
He added: "Sometimes, you have to lose some matches to win, and overcome setbacks to mature as a player and as a group. We're going through this phase right now in the league and the Champions League - we've played here for two consecutive seasons - we're maturing as a team, but we need to keep working and believing. We feel a great disappointment, but that definitely doesn't define us. We will be stronger with the return of our players who have been absent for a long time."
Regarding injuries: "It's tough. We've spent the entire season without five or six of our best players, so what we've achieved is incredible. We did our best, the whole team, everyone was flying with us, and everyone believed in our abilities. It was clear that we believed in our capabilities. On another night, we might score two or three goals, but those first twenty minutes when they score and we miss our chances are a painful blow. We will come back; there are three matches left, it has been a long season, but we will continue to work hard because we want to win and give our best."
He concluded: "We are all thirsty for titles; that's why we play football. We want to win titles, we want to be at the top, to win everything. For some reason, it wasn't meant to be. We were very close, and that's not good enough. Arsenal deserves to strive for titles, but there's not much we can do. Many stars have suffered defeats to reach the top. It pains me to see the players and the coach. We wanted to be in Munich, but that doesn't define our future, and we will come back."
