Liam Roberts, the Millwall goalkeeper, faces the risk of a longer suspension after his violent tackle on Jean-Philippe Mateta, the Crystal Palace striker, during the fifth-round match of the FA Cup between the two teams, which resulted in the player being hospitalized.

Roberts received a straight red card after kicking Mateta in the head while competing for the ball, causing the French striker to suffer a serious injury that required 25 stitches.

The English Football Association announced on Wednesday that it has submitted a request to increase the suspension imposed on Roberts, considering the standard penalty of a three-match ban for violent conduct insufficient in this case.

Steve Parish, the Crystal Palace chairman, described the tackle as the most reckless he has seen, while journalist Piers Morgan called the incident disgraceful.

Mateta was discharged from the hospital on Saturday evening after suffering a serious injury to his left ear due to the violent tackle, amid anticipation for the FA's decision regarding the extension of the goalkeeper's suspension.
