Dovkas matches Alessandro Del Piero's historic achievement in UEFA Champions League
Greek forward Tasos Douvikas, of Como, has made history in the UEFA Champions League by becoming the second player ever to score in each of his team's first four matches in the competition, according to statistics from Opta. He replicates a historic achievement that dates back to Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero.
The achievement came after Dovkas found the net against RC Lens in the 7th minute, during the fourth round of the league stage, continuing a scoring streak that began against RB Leipzig in Como's European campaign opener, when the Italian side won 4-1. He then scored against Feyenoord despite a 3-2 loss, before netting against Manchester United in a big 4-1 victory. The Greek forward added a second goal against RC Lens in the 32nd minute, bringing his tally to five goals in the first four matches of the competition.
Only Alessandro Del Piero precedes him in this achievement, having scored in Juventus' first five matches in the UEFA Champions League during the 1995-1996 season, in which the Italian club won the title. UEFA records confirm that Del Piero indeed achieved a scoring streak that extended to five consecutive matches in that edition.
Douvikas' achievement carries another historical significance at the Greek level, as UEFA had noted before the match against RC Lens that the striker, who scored in his first three matches, was on the verge of equalling the Greek record for scoring in four consecutive matches in the UEFA Champions League, held by his compatriot Vangelis Pavlidis, a forward for SL Benfica. By scoring against RC Lens, Douvikas also matched this record.
