Kimmich: We should have won against Dortmund, and the support I received from Bayern and the German federation was exceptional
Joshua Kimmich, a player for Bayern Munich, has talked about the difficult period he has gone through on a personal level after his team drew 2-2 against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening in the Klassiker of Germany during the eighth round of the Bundesliga.
Kimmich said: "It has definitely been a very difficult week for me. I am happy to be back on the pitch. It wasn't easy, but during the match, you can forget everything, at least for a short while. And when you see the injuries we suffered today, it reminds you that the most important thing in the end is to stay healthy."
He added: "Regardless of today's result, I believe we are going through a tough time at the moment, given everything happening around the team and the coach, the new injuries we have suffered, as well as what I have personally gone through. We will now see what we can deliver as a team, and we must unite and stand by each other."
The German midfielder spoke about the support he received from his club and the German Football Association during his personal crisis, saying: "I have to say that the support I received from the club, the people who stood by me, and the German Football Association, along with everyone who attended the funeral, was truly exceptional for me personally and for my family. It showed me that I am exactly in the right place here."
Speaking about the draw against Borussia Dortmund, Kimmich said: "I think this was our third draw, and today's result was certainly unnecessary. Especially considering how the second half went, I don't think the draw was a fair reflection of what happened in the match. But this is football sometimes. Dortmund never gave up and kept fighting until the end. Ultimately, we have to accept this point, even though we should have won for sure."
When asked what surprised him more during the match, Harry Kane's missed penalty or Borussia Dortmund's reliance on four defenders for most of the game, Joshua Kimmich chose the English striker's miss, saying: "I think Harry's missed penalty is what surprised me the most. We were just talking about it; his penalty success rate is amazing, and he had to miss one at some point. I'm sure there will be more important penalties in the future, and he will score them again."
