Simeone matches historic record in LaLiga
Diego Simeone, the Argentine manager of Atlético Madrid, continues to make history with his team after equalling a historic record in LaLiga, following the victory of the Rojiblancos over Levante by 2-0 away from home in the 11th round of the 2026-2027 season.
Diego Simeone has reached his 344th victory in LaLiga, equalling the record set by the late Luis Aragonés, who achieved the same number of wins in 757 matches. Meanwhile, Atlético's coach needed only 565 matches, which is 192 matches fewer, to become joint top of the list of the most successful coaches in the history of the competition.
This achievement comes after Diego Simeone has surpassed historic names in Spanish football, most notably Miguel Muñoz with 323 wins, Ernesto Valverde with 278 wins, Manuel Pellegrini with 271 wins, along with Javier Irureta with 259 wins, Fernando Daúchik with 234 wins, Marcelino García Toral with 208 wins, Javier Clemente with 205 wins, and Víctor Fernández with 202 wins.
After the match, Simeone expressed his happiness at the achievement but was keen to credit the players who have worked with him throughout his time at Atlético, saying: "In truth, I feel that this achievement is a gift from a large group of players who committed to a single line and delivered exceptional work. I feel very close to all the players who helped me reach the position I am in now."
The Argentine coach expressed his gratitude to Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the former CEO of the club, for giving him the opportunity to lead the team: "I must return to the moment when Miguel decided to give me this opportunity, despite my lack of experience in Europe, and without that moment, we would not have reached where we are today. I have always had many people who helped and supported me, and what we have built has not been easy."
Diego Simeone is one of the most successful managers in Atlético Madrid's history, having led the team to win the LaLiga title twice in the 2013-2014 and 2020-2021 seasons, along with two UEFA Europa League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa de España, bringing his total trophies with the team to 8.
