Report: Paris stars rested and Barcelona players fatigued ahead of crucial clash
FC Barcelona faces a physical challenge ahead of their upcoming match against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital, given the clear difference in minutes played by the stars of both teams during the current season. This may give the Parisian club an advantage in the anticipated UEFA Champions League clash.
Spanish newspaper "Sport" has shed light on this matter, pointing out that the rotation policy implemented by Luis Enrique has granted several Paris Saint-Germain players longer rest periods, while Hans Flick has relied on his key players for longer stretches in LaLiga.
Ousmane Dembélé stands out as the clearest example of Luis Enrique's management of playing minutes, having participated in only 238 minutes across five matches in Ligue 1, out of a possible 630 minutes, which amounts to a rate of 37.8%, according to figures reported by the newspaper "Sport" citing "Transfermarkt".
In contrast, Ousmane Dembélé has received more playing time in the UEFA Champions League, having played 140 minutes over two matches, averaging 70 minutes per game, compared to 47.6 minutes per match in Ligue 1.
The French star missed only one match in the league due to injury, against Lille, while the rest of his absences were linked to tactical decisions made by Luis Enrique, who left him out of the squad for the match against Le Mans to rest him after his participation with the France national team during the international break.
Despite limited domestic appearances, Dembélé has scored four goals and provided six assists in nine matches this season, with three goals and three assists coming from his tally in the UEFA Champions League.
Enzo Maresca, the head coach of Manchester City, has reopened the discussion regarding Paris Saint-Germain's advantage in European competition after his team's 4-2 loss to the Parisian club at the Etihad Stadium.
Mariska pointed out Luis Enrique's ability to rest his star players ahead of UEFA Champions League matches, considering that the lower level of competition in Ligue 1 compared to the Premier League gives Paris Saint-Germain a greater opportunity to lighten the load on their stars.
The comparison between Ousmane Dembélé and Erling Haaland highlights the difference in playing minutes, as the Manchester City forward has played 620 minutes out of a possible 630 in the Premier League, achieving a rate of 98.4%, while Dembélé has only participated in 37.8% of the available minutes in Ligue 1.
Luis Enrique's rotation strategy includes more than just Ousmane Dembélé, as Zaire Emery has topped the list of Paris Saint-Germain players with the most appearances in Ligue 1, having played 503 minutes out of a possible 630, which is 79.8%.
Vitinha followed with 496 minutes, at a rate of 78.7%, then João Neves with 451 minutes, at 71.6%. In contrast, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia participated for 377 minutes, Désiré Doué for 355 minutes, Fabián Ruiz for 326 minutes, and Nuno Mendes for 217 minutes.
At Barcelona, Lamine Yamal has played 741 minutes over nine rounds of LaLiga, which is equivalent to 91.5% of the total possible minutes, while Raphinha has participated in 575 minutes across eight matches, at a rate of 79.9%, despite missing two games following the international break with Brazil.
Barcelona's reliance on key players extended to the rest of the squad, as Pedri and Xavi Espart each participated for 620 minutes, while Eric Garcia played for 603 minutes, Gerard Martin for 571 minutes, Fermín for 538 minutes, Rodri for 517 minutes, and Pau Cubarsí for 512 minutes.
The Spanish newspaper suggests that the management of playing minutes could be a significant factor in the upcoming clash, especially since Paris Saint-Germain has managed to rest several of its players during matches in Ligue 1, while FC Barcelona has had to rely on its stars for longer periods to maintain its rhythm in LaLiga.
As Paris Saint-Germain heads into their clash with FC Barcelona following their win against Strasbourg, the Catalan side enters the match amid questions regarding the impact of the physical load difference on player performance, and whether the rest periods enjoyed by Luis Enrique's stars will give Paris Saint-Germain a decisive advantage at the Parc des Princes.
