Kovač defends Maximilian Beier: his value goes beyond the numbers
Niko Kovač has defended Borussia Dortmund's forward Maximilian Beier amid criticism regarding his performance and level as a winger, asserting that the player contributes a lot to the team and that his multiple roles make him an important element in his plans for the upcoming period.
Niko Kovač stated at the press conference before the match against 1.FC Union Berlin: "We must put things into perspective; we cannot turn the opinion of the minority into the opinion of the majority." He added: "I am a coach, and I know what Maxi can offer, and I also talk to him. He has already played many good matches."
Despite Bayern's numbers this season not being perfect, as they have won 47% of duels, succeeded in three dribbles out of eight attempts, and scored one goal from 17 shots, the player's contributions are not limited to attacking statistics. He has provided two assists and won a penalty, while Kovač believes that the player's commitment and willingness to perform various roles give him great value.
The Croatian coach added, praising the versatility of the 23-year-old player: "Maxi is doing his job very well, he accepts everything I ask of him and takes it seriously. If necessary, he will immediately go and play as a goalkeeper." Bayer has started in six out of seven matches that Dortmund has played in the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League this season, switching between left and right wing positions and defensive and offensive roles, which gives Kovač additional options during a busy match schedule.
