Borussia Dortmund officially renews Niko Kovač's contract until 2029

Borussia Dortmund have announced the extension of head coach Niko Kovač's contract until June 30, 2029, in a move that reflects the club's confidence in the work the Croatian manager has been doing since taking charge. The club has also renewed its commitment to his assistants Robert Kovač and Filip Tabałowicz, allowing the current coaching staff to continue leading the team in the upcoming phase.

Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Lars Ricken has stated that the club has been moving in the right direction since Niko Kovač took over responsibility more than a year and a half ago, noting that the coach has successfully developed the team continuously and enjoys great acceptance within the club. He added that the contract extension represents a clear message regarding Dortmund's desire to maintain stability and continuity, confirming that both parties quickly reached an agreement to continue working together.

Karsten Kramer, the club's CEO, praised Niko Kovač's connection with Borussia Dortmund and his alignment with the team's identity. Meanwhile, sporting director Ömer Toprak confirmed that the coach possesses great precision in his work and brings calm to the team thanks to his experience, explaining that the ongoing communication between them aims to continue developing the group and achieving further success.

Niko Kovač took over as manager of Borussia Dortmund in the spring of 2025, when the team was in 11th place, before guiding them to UEFA Champions League qualification in the final round of the 2024-2025 season. Last season, he led the team to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga with 73 points, which is the fifth-best points total in the club's history.

Niko Kovač has managed Borussia Dortmund in 53 Bundesliga matches, earning 114 points, with an average of 2.15 points per game, the highest among all coaches who have led the team in the club's history.

The Croatian coach commented on his contract extension: "We have started a clear path of development together and laid important foundations for the future, and we aim to build on them. We have a clear vision regarding our style of play, how we present ourselves as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals. The most important thing is not to settle for what we have achieved, but to work every day to become better. We see great potential and believe that we can achieve more together, with great determination and resolve."
