Carrick: Manchester United have overcome Martínez crisis and team atmosphere is at its best
Michael Carrick, the manager of Manchester United, has confirmed that the team has moved past the crisis sparked by Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez's comments, who criticized the club's management following the defeat against Atlético by two goals to nil. He emphasized that the incident did not affect the team's atmosphere or cohesion ahead of their match against Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday.
Martínez has sparked widespread controversy after questioning the level of support the club's management provides to manager Carrick. He criticized the transfer policy during the last summer transfer window, arguing that the responsibility does not lie solely with the manager and players, but extends to other officials, primarily sporting director Jason Wilcox.
Michael Carrick said at the press conference before the match against Leeds: "It's over, we've moved on from what happened as a group, and there is no crisis. Someone said something they shouldn't have, but that won't distract us from what we're building here or affect the prevailing spirit within the team." He added that the players have trained exceptionally well, confirming that the atmosphere has been at its best compared to the previous period.
The English coach stated that Martínez acknowledged his mistake and apologized, considering his admission sufficient to close the matter. He clarified: "He issued his statement and recognized his error, and that is enough for us." He also emphasized that the team is united and eager to change the situation quickly, despite recent poor results, confirming that the group has already moved past the incident.
Martínez had apologized on Thursday following a meeting with club officials and the coach, explaining that his frustration after the loss led him to express his feelings at an inappropriate time and place. Meanwhile, Carrick confirmed that the Argentine defender will be included in the squad for the match against Leeds United.
