Indonesia crowned champions of the first edition of the ASEAN Cup
Indonesia won the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup after defeating Thailand on penalties 4-2, following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes in the final match held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in the capital Jakarta.
Indonesia opened the scoring in the 84th minute through Dean James, but Thailand quickly equalized via Eiklas Saneron in the 87th minute. Peradol Chamrasami added a second goal for the Thai national team in the 111th minute, before Elkan Baggott managed to bring the match back to level terms with a goal in the 116th minute.
Thailand lost control of the match after Nicholas Mickelson received a red card in the 84th minute for a second yellow card. However, despite being a man down, the Thai national team managed to take the lead during extra time, before Indonesia equalized with a goal from Elkan Baggott, forcing the match to go to penalties.
In the penalty shootout, Indonesia scored four attempts, while the Thailand team missed two, one of which was saved by goalkeeper Emil Audero, who became the hero of the decisive moment and gave his country its first title in the tournament.
Indonesia's crowning came after an exciting journey in the tournament, where they topped their group following strong competition, before continuing their path to the final and securing the title against Thailand, making history as the first team to win the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
