Ethan Mbappé apologises after red card against Real Betis

Ethan Mbappé received a red card early in the second half during Lille's 3-2 loss to Real Betis on Tuesday evening in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The 19-year-old player was sent off after elbowing Brazilian defender Natan in the face during a verbal altercation. Following a review by the Video Assistant Referee, the referee issued a straight red card, marking the first of his brother Ethan Mbappé's career.

Lille finished the match with ten men after Ethan Mbappé left his teammates in a difficult position late on, and the team could not turn around their deficit against the Spanish club. Ethan had started the match well, providing an assist for Japanese forward Ayase Ueda in the 12th minute.

Ethan Mbappé has taken to his social media accounts to say: "I would like to apologize to my teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans for this unacceptable behavior. The defeat rests entirely on my shoulders, and I take full responsibility. I left my teammates in a difficult position in the biggest competition. I am sorry."

The player will miss the upcoming match against Lille in London on October 13, as part of the second round of the UEFA Champions League, with the number of matches he will be absent for due to the red card suspension to be determined later.
