Officially: Richard Hughes leaves his position as sporting director of Liverpool

Liverpool have officially announced the departure of Richard Hughes from his position as the club's sporting director, bringing an end to his tenure at Anfield after more than two years, having taken on the role in the summer of 2024 after joining from AFC Bournemouth.

Hughes played a crucial role after Jürgen Klopp's departure, contributing to the signing of Arne Slot, who led the team to win the Premier League title in the 2024-2025 season, before circumstances later changed within the club.

During Hughes' tenure, Liverpool spent huge amounts in the transfer market, highlighted by the signings of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike, along with the recent big deal to bring in Bradley Barcola as part of the team's rebuilding.

Hughes has left after the summer transfer window closed, having previously informed the club's management of his desire for a new challenge, before continuing in his position until the end of the transfer period to avoid impacting the team's work.

Liverpool are set to begin the search for a new sporting director to replace Hughes, while reports suggest that his next destination will be Al-Hilal, where he is close to taking on a new administrative role with the club.
