Martínez: This is why I joined Chelsea, and we need to work defensively

Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has confirmed that he came to Chelsea to help and compete for the Premier League title, following his first appearance for the team against Brighton.

Martínez said after the win over Brighton 4-3 in the Premier League: "I spoke with Chelsea legends John Terry and Petr Čech, and I know very well how massive this club is and what we want to achieve this season. I came here to help."

He added: "I have had seven wonderful years with Aston Villa, but I came to Chelsea for the challenge and to compete for the Premier League title."

The Argentine goalkeeper spoke about his first appearance in a Chelsea shirt, saying: "I only trained for one day with the team, but the players have treated me wonderfully over the past two days. I know the level of talent we have up front, and I am trying to add more stability at the back."

Regarding the win over Brighton by a score of 4-2, Martínez said: "A win is a win. I know it wasn't a perfect match, but in the end, what we need is to achieve victory and move forward. We still have 36 matches ahead of us, and we will take the season one game at a time."

He continued: "I am here for a reason. The attacking trio is fantastic, and when we move forward, we can hurt any team. We had many opportunities to finish the match, and Cole Palmer and João Pedro could have wrapped it up."

Martínez concluded his statements by saying: "In the back line, we need to work on reducing the number of goals we concede."
