Alonso Seeks to Sign Aston Villa Keeper
Xabi Alonso, the manager of Chelsea, has recently asked the club's management to sign Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. However, the club's management appears to be committed to relying on young keeper Mike Benders.
According to "CaughtOffside", Chelsea is prepared to take a gamble in the goalkeeping position, despite Robert Sanchez's modest display once again during the victory over Fulham on Monday night.
Sanchez has been unconvincing as Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper for some time now, but the club prefers to wait until Banders gets an opportunity to take over the number one spot, rather than moving to sign a new keeper during the transfer window.
Despite Alonso's preference for signing Martinez, this option seems unlikely at the moment, as Chelsea is focused on developing their young talents, particularly Benders, who is highly regarded within the club after his impressive performance during his loan at Strasbourg last season.
Chelsea has taken a more flexible approach in the summer transfer market, having signed experienced players like Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, among other deals. However, they do not seem ready to take the same approach with Martinez to replace Sanchez.
The report indicates that signing Martinez could hinder Benders' development, despite Chelsea's need to replace Sanchez. The team has a realistic chance of competing for the Premier League title this season, but winning the trophy will be challenging with Sanchez still in goal.
