Defensive Crisis Puts Mourinho in a Bind Ahead of Real Madrid's First Official Match
Real Madrid starts its official journey in the new season with a match against Espanyol on Saturday, August 22, at 10:30 PM, amidst a clear crisis in the center-back position that presents coach José Mourinho with an early challenge before the competitions begin.
According to "Mundo Deportivo," Real Madrid's center-back problem still haunts the club, the same crisis faced by former coaches Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Arbeloa. Despite the departure of David Alaba and the signing of Ibrahima Konaté, the situation in the backline has not seen the expected resolution.
Mourinho is well aware of the magnitude of the problem, which has been evident since he took charge of the team, as he has been calling for the signing of a new center-back. However, his available options remain limited ahead of the clash against Espanyol.
The Portuguese coach has only three center-backs available before the match: Antonio Rudiger, Hausen, and Ibrahima Konate. Marco Asensio and Eder Militao are sidelined due to injuries, and Mourinho does not rely on Asensio, while Militao needs more time before returning to action.
The choice of the defensive duo against Espanyol remains a point of concern, especially since Konaté only featured against Schalke, partnering with Hausen, who has shown improvement compared to previous matches, yet still raises some questions. On the other hand, Rüdiger has not provided enough reassuring signs during the preparation period.
Mourinho finds himself needing to find a quick solution to the center-back crisis before the season begins, given the limited options available. This area remains one of the key issues concerning Real Madrid ahead of their first official match against Espanyol.
