In the summer of 2001, Croatian striker Boshko Balaban was one of the most sought-after names in Europe after shining with Dinamo Zagreb. However, his transfer to Aston Villa later turned into one of the strangest stories in the history of the English club.

Aston Villa has paid £5.8 million to sign Balaban, who was earning £20,000 a week, amid great expectations that he will become one of the standout strikers in the Premier League.

However, the surprise is that the deal itself has caused controversy within the club, after the player's agent revealed that negotiations took place between then-Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis and the player, without the expected involvement of coach John Gregory. Nevertheless, Gregory had initially expressed confidence in Balaban's ability to succeed with the team.

On the pitch, things did not go as expected; Baldwin played only nine matches with Aston Villa over two and a half years, seven of which were as a substitute. He was also loaned to Dinamo Zagreb, where he regained his form and scored 15 goals in 24 matches.

Interestingly, the player later demonstrated that the issue wasn't his ability to score goals, as he excelled after leaving Villa for Club Brugge, netting 25 goals in one season and then 27 in the following season. The Balaban story remains an example that a big transfer does not guarantee success, and that managerial decisions, timing, and opportunity can be more important than the player's value itself.
