Brazilian club Corinthians has announced its decision not to extend the contract of Dutch forward Memphis Depay, stating that the decision was made for financial reasons, despite a previous agreement – according to the player – to extend his contract for an additional two years.

Depay expressed his anger over the club's decision, confirming that the contract extension had been explicitly agreed upon by the club president and the sporting, legal, and financial departments.

The Dutch striker stated on his X account: "I am extremely frustrated to read that Corinthians has decided not to honor the existing agreement between us to extend my contract for two years. This extension was clearly agreed upon."

He added: "Some individuals have decided to breach this agreement. I did not want to reach this situation, and I have always respected the club, but now I am forced to take a strong stance to protect my interests. I will speak publicly in the coming days, and rest assured, I will not let this unacceptable behavior go unpunished."

It seems that Depay is hinting at the possibility of taking legal action against Corinthians. The 32-year-old player joined the Brazilian club in 2024 from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, making 79 appearances and scoring 20 goals during his time there. Depay is now a free agent.
