Algerian Football Federation Backs Vladimir Petkovic, Delays Departure
Reports indicate that the Algerian Football Federation has decided to keep Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic at the helm of the national team, despite widespread speculation about his imminent departure following the "Desert Foxes" exit in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
According to Algerian radio, the federation preferred to renew its trust in Petkovic, temporarily ending the recent debate about his future with the team.
Several media outlets had reported an imminent separation between the two parties after the exit from the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland, amid disagreements over the contract termination process, as well as discussions regarding the financial compensation the coach might receive if dismissed.
However, the Algerian federation, according to the same source, chose the option of technical stability, preferring to allow Petkovic to continue in his role rather than enter into legal proceedings or contractual disputes, giving him a chance to pursue the project he started when he took over in 2024.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Swiss coach's continuation may be conditional on making adjustments to the coaching staff, including appointing an Algerian assistant coach to work alongside him, aimed at enhancing communication with the national team's environment and benefiting from local knowledge of Algerian football.
If this decision is confirmed officially, it will represent a significant shift in the Algerian federation's stance, as Petkovic's departure seemed almost certain, allowing him to continue his mission with the "Desert Foxes" in hopes of correcting the course and preparing for upcoming challenges.
