Switzerland Eliminates Algeria with Two Goals to Advance to Round of 16
Algeria has exited the 2026 World Cup in the Round of 32, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, who capitalized on their chances despite Algeria's prolonged periods of dominance.
The Algerian team started strong, imposing their style from the first minutes with ball possession and varied attacks, while Switzerland relied on a solid defense and quick counter-attacks towards Luka Zidane's goal.
Despite Algeria's good start, Switzerland opened the scoring early in the 10th minute when Breel Embolo took advantage of a rapid counter-attack and found the net, giving his team the lead.
Algeria had several opportunities to equalize, boasting 57% possession compared to Switzerland's 43% by the 41st minute, but their attacking efforts lacked effectiveness in front of goal.
Ibrahim Maaza squandered a golden chance in stoppage time of the first half, receiving a setup from Houssem Aouar inside the box, but his shot went wide, leaving Switzerland ahead 1-0 at halftime.
As the second half kicked off, Algeria faced another setback when Dan Ndoye unleashed a powerful shot in the 46th minute that found the back of Luka Zidane's net, adding a second goal for Switzerland.
Algeria attempted to reduce the deficit, with their best chance coming in the 50th minute when Rafik Belghali delivered a precise cross to Riyad Mahrez, but Denis Zakaria intervened just in time to clear the ball before it reached the net.
Hajjam also tried his luck with a shot from outside the box in the 77th minute, but it sailed wide of the goal, before goalkeeper Luka Zidane shone in the 81st minute, denying a dangerous one-on-one opportunity and preventing Switzerland from adding a third goal.
With this victory, Switzerland continues its journey in the 2026 World Cup, while Algeria's campaign comes to an end in the Round of 32, marking the first official meeting between the two teams.
