Hugo Broos Announces Retirement from South Africa National Team
Belgian coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that he will step down as the head coach of the South Africa national team, putting an end to speculation that has lingered since the team's exit from the 2026 World Cup, where he led them to the knockout stages for the first time in history.
The 74-year-old Broos had stated before the tournament that the World Cup would be his last coaching assignment, although he left the door open for a possible change of heart after South Africa's exit in the Round of 32 following a loss to Canada, one of the host nations. However, he has now reiterated that his decision is final.
In comments to Belgian outlet Football News, the coach said: "I will not continue as a coach; I have made my decision final. If they need me in another role, such as talent scouting or providing consultancy, I might consider it, but I no longer want football to dominate my life completely."
Broos mentioned that he had discussions with the president of the South African Football Association, who expressed a desire for him to remain involved in an administrative or advisory capacity. He plans to return to South Africa at the end of July to say goodbye to everyone and hear the official proposal. He humorously noted that his wife welcomed his decision to retire from coaching, considering that taking on advisory roles occasionally would be a suitable option for him moving forward.
