England vs Mexico Match Postponed Due to Bad Weather
The Round of 16 match between England and Mexico in the 2026 World Cup has been postponed due to severe weather, as the Estadio Azteca was hit by thunderstorms and heavy rain that flooded the pitch, according to The Sun.
Sources indicate that organizers decided to temporarily halt preparations for the match after players and fans were affected by the heavy rain, before FIFA sets a new kickoff time at 4 AM Cairo time.
The Sun added that FIFA's World Cup regulations require a 30-minute wait if lightning is detected in the stadium vicinity, which led to the postponement of the kickoff.
The report also mentioned that there was a proposal to move the match time to 9 PM Cairo time due to weather forecasts.
Furthermore, The Sun highlighted that the Mexican government had also requested a change in the match time for security reasons, not just due to weather, following a stampede incident after Mexico's victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32, which resulted in four fatalities.
The newspaper confirmed that this is not the first time World Cup matches have been affected by weather, as the Mexico vs Ecuador match was previously postponed due to thunderstorms, and the France vs Iraq match was halted for two hours due to bad weather, with fans evacuated from the stands until conditions improved.
