Egypt Joins Elite African Teams in World Cup Knockout Stages
Egypt has etched its name in World Cup history by becoming the fifth African team to secure a victory in a knockout match, defeating Australia on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time ever.
With this achievement, the "Pharaohs" join a select group of only four other African teams that have previously won knockout matches in World Cup history: Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010, and Morocco in 2022 and 2026, making Egypt the latest addition to this historic list.
This qualification marks a significant milestone in Egyptian football, as the team has broken a long-standing curse that persisted since its first World Cup appearance in 1934, achieving its first-ever knockout victory and continuing its journey in the tournament with high hopes of further historical achievements.
The Egyptian team now faces a new challenge in the next round, having solidified its place among the top 16 teams in the world, confirming that the 2026 World Cup will be a landmark event in the history of Egyptian and African football.
