Spain Thrashes Austria 3-0 to Advance to World Cup Round of 16
Spain secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, in a match held on Thursday evening at the Los Angeles Stadium.
With this win, Spain booked their place in the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Croatia vs. Portugal match.
Spain started the match strongly, looking for an early goal against a tactically disciplined Austrian side. Marc Cucurella thought he had scored in the 30th minute, but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul on the Austrian goalkeeper.
Spain continued to apply pressure and finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal scored after receiving a cross from Cucurella, converting it with a direct shot into the net. Pau Torres nearly added a second with a free kick that hit the crossbar.
In the 66th minute, Spain doubled their lead through Pedro Porro, who headed home a cross from Pau Torres after a pass from Cucurella inside the box. David Alaba then saved Austria from conceding a certain goal after a shot from Lamine Yamal in the 84th minute.
Spain managed to score a third goal in the 89th minute, with Mikel Oyarzabal converting another cross from Cucurella into the net with ease, sealing the match at 3-0 for La Roja.
