Officially.. Lewandowski Joins Chicago Fire
Chicago Fire officially announced the signing of Polish star striker Robert Lewandowski, coming from his last European stint with Barcelona, with a contract extending until the 2027-2028 season in Major League Soccer. He will occupy a designated player slot as well as an international player slot, pending the completion of his work visa and international transfer certificate.
The player comes to Chicago after a historic career during which he scored more than 700 goals with clubs and the Polish national team.
The club's sporting director and head coach, Gregg Berhalter, said that signing Lewandowski reflects the club's great ambitions, adding: "From the first day I met with Joe Mansueto, our goal was to build a world-class club that wins championships and inspires fans. Robert embodies these values; he is a champion and a top-tier competitor, and his joining elevates the team to the status that the city of Chicago deserves."
Lewandowski, aged 37, joins the American league after a career filled with titles, having won the UEFA Champions League and secured 10 league titles in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, in addition to Spanish league titles with Barcelona. He was awarded the FIFA Best Player of the Year twice in 2020 and 2021, and is considered one of the top scorers in the history of European football.
This transition comes at a time when the Chicago Fire holds third place in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, following a strong season in which the team scored 68 goals in 2025, the second-highest number in the league. The club is also preparing for a new phase with its modern stadium project, "McDonald's Park," scheduled to open in 2028.
Lewandowski becomes the eighth Polish player in the club's history, joining a list of former stars such as Hristo Stoichkov, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Shaqiri, in a move that underscores the club's direction towards attracting major global names.
