Wahbi: Our Goal is to Win the World Cup and We Have All the Capabilities
Moroccan national team coach Mohamed Wahbi expressed his satisfaction following the thrilling victory achieved by the 'Atlas Lions' over the Haitian team with a score of 4-2, at the conclusion of the group stage competitions of the 2026 World Cup, confirming that the national team delivered one of its most dominant performances in its World Cup history.
Wahbi explained in his statements after the match that the primary goal was to secure the win and wait for the results of the group, noting that the overall team performance was positive despite some difficulties that appeared during the first half.
The national coach said: 'Our main goal was to win and try to finish the group stage at the top according to the results. It is true that we did not deliver a perfect first half, but we were the better side and created a large number of chances that could have resulted in more goals.'
He added: 'I warned the players against rushing, because our strong desire to score sometimes caused the team to lose its balance. The Haitian team played without pressure and was looking to end its participation on a good note, which caused us some trouble during parts of the match.'
He continued: 'I don't think Morocco has ever dominated a World Cup match in this way. I don't recall a match where we created this number of chances. There are many positive indicators, but we must continue working because our real journey in this tournament starts now.'
He went on: 'It is not easy for a player who has not participated much in the tournament to start as a main player and deliver his best performance directly. That's why I didn't want to make too many changes at once. We noticed that some players needed time to adapt before their performance clearly improved in the second half.'
He added: 'When we learned of Brazil's lead while the result was indicating a 2-2 draw, we focused on securing the win first, and at the same time, we thought about managing the efforts of some players in anticipation of the Round of 32 match. I am happy with the way we finished the match because the most important thing in the end is to achieve victory.'
Speaking about the next stage, Wahbi confirmed that the Moroccan national team will enter the knockout stages with great ambitions and growing confidence, noting that the group now believes in its ability to compete with the strongest teams.
Speaking about the next stage, he said: 'We will move to Monterrey in Mexico. We hoped to play the match in Houston, but that will not change our goals. The players are happy with this victory because they fought for it, and we will continue to work with the same spirit, confidence, and humility.'
He concluded: 'No matter who the next opponent is, we are ready for them. We have a strong group, an excellent staff, and great fans. Morocco has entered a new phase, the players have begun to believe in their capabilities, and other teams have started to respect us. Therefore, we must trust ourselves, and our goal should be to win the World Cup, while respecting all competitors at the same time.'
The Moroccan national team, which finished the group stage in second place in Group C, will face the leader of Group F in the Round of 32, in a new stage of its ambitious journey in the 2026 World Cup.
