The Idea of a World Cup with 64 Teams Moves Away from Implementation

Sunday 21-06-2026
Press reports have revealed that the proposal to increase the number of teams participating in the World Cup to 64, which was submitted by the South American Football Confederation, is gradually losing momentum, with decreasing chances of its adoption by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

According to RMC Sport, FIFA President Gianni Infantino is not showing much enthusiasm for the idea within the federation's corridors, as he is cautious about further expanding the tournament, especially after adopting the 48-team format starting from the 2026 edition.

The European Football Association continues its firm rejection of the proposal, while the Asian Football Confederation expresses significant doubts about the feasibility of increasing the number of participants, which weakens the chances of the project's approval.

In light of this stance from the prominent continental federations, the possibility of holding a World Cup with 64 teams seems very distant at the moment, with the 48-team system being more likely to continue in the upcoming editions.
