Al-Zawraa Strengthens Its Ranks with Erbil Club Duo
Al-Zawraa Club officially announced the completion by signing the former stars of Erbil, in a step reflecting the 'Nawras' desire to enhance its arsenal before the start of the new season.
The most prominent deal was the signing of the Uzbek defender Marlen Chupanov, 25 years old. The player comes from Erbil after an impressive season during which he played 25 matches and scored 4 goals despite his defensive position, reflecting his ability to advance and participate in set-pieces.
Chupanov's career is not new to the region. He has previously represented strong clubs in Central Asia such as Tajikistan's Istiklol Dushanbe, Uzbekistan's Shurtan, Andijan, and Pakhtakor. His experience in the rising Uzbek league, along with his brilliance with Erbil, made him a target for Al-Zawraa to fill the defensive depth gap.
The second deal is the Uruguayan striker Michael Cabrera, 30 years old. Cabrera joined Erbil in the second half of last season and made a quick impact: 6 goals in only 18 appearances, an excellent scoring rate that justifies Al-Zawraa's eagerness to sign him.
The player's record is rich with moves across continents, having previously played for Honduras' Motagua Club and several other clubs in South America. He is characterized by physical strength and a scoring instinct inside the box, and he will be the offensive card the coach relies on to solve the dilemma of missed opportunities.
Special sources revealed that the current technical director of Al-Zawraa, Basem Qasim, is the main architect of the two deals. The coach previously led Erbil last season and knows Chupanov and Cabrera closely, being fully aware of their capabilities.
