Mbappé: I Play to Achieve the Title, and We Are Required to Do So
Kylian Mbappé commented on the French national team's 3-1 victory over Senegal in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, after scoring two goals and becoming the top scorer in the history of the French national team.
Mbappe said in a television interview: "I don't think we've fully taken off yet, but a good start is always important because it gives us a greater sense of calm, even though we are never completely calm in the World Cup. We've seen all the teams; the start is always difficult, and every team wants to present the best image of their country."
He added: "Today was not an easy match, but we know that at any moment we can score and make a difference, and that is what helped us."
Regarding the criticisms, Mbappe clarified: "There is no desire for revenge. If I started playing just to respond to critics, I would continue until I am 80. I play to write the history of my country, reach the World Cup final, and win the title. The rest is a natural part of football."
He concluded: "This is just the first match in the group stage. Whether people are overly enthusiastic or critical, we are required to remain calm and focused, as everything moves quickly in the World Cup. We have another match in a few days, and we must win."
