San Siro Approaches Its End: Milan and Inter Set Date for Stadium Demolition
The clubs of Milan and Inter Milan are nearing the implementation of their joint project to build a new shared stadium, as the final outlines of the plan, which includes demolishing San Siro after both teams move to their new headquarters, have become clear.
According to 'Football Italia', the demolition of San Siro is expected to begin in 2031, following the opening of the new stadium anticipated during the 2030/2031 season, thus ending a long chapter of debate over the future of one of the world's most famous football stadiums.
According to the current plan, the construction of the new stadium will commence in 2027 on land adjacent to the current San Siro site, while the historic stadium will continue to host Milan and Inter matches until the project is completed and the clubs officially relocate.
The clubs believe that San Siro is no longer able to meet the economic demands of modern stadiums in Europe, and the cost of its renovation would be extremely high compared to building a new stadium that offers greater commercial and investment potential.
The report noted that the new stadium project was first proposed in 2019, but faced repeated delays due to political objections and concerns over preserving the stadium's historical value, before procedures accelerated recently with the clubs' full commitment to executing the project.
San Siro will not completely disappear according to current proposals, as plans are directed towards retaining parts of the stadium's famous exterior facade within the redevelopment project of the surrounding area, while most of the stands and internal facilities will be demolished after Milan and Inter move to their new stadium.
