Rooney Violently Attacks Salah: 'Destroying His Legacy at Liverpool and His Statements Are Unacceptable'

Monday 18-05-2026
Wayne Rooney sparked controversy with fiery statements against Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star, calling for his exclusion from the recent match against Brentford at Anfield. This came in the wake of Salah's comments criticizing the team's style under coach Arne Slot.

According to what was reported by "BBC Sports," Rooney considered Salah's statements to be "selfish" after the Egyptian star spoke about the necessity for Liverpool to return to its attacking style that it was known for during the era of coach Jurgen Klopp, which Rooney saw as a direct criticism of the current coaching staff.

Rooney said: "I feel sad about the situation after everything Salah has done for Liverpool. It's not acceptable to send such public messages against Slot."

Rooney continued: "He wants to return to the heavy metal football that Liverpool played under Jurgen Klopp, and this is a direct criticism of Slot," while also explaining that he does not see Salah physically capable of executing this high-tempo style at this stage, saying that "his legs can no longer withstand this pace."

Rooney pointed out, "If I were in Slot's place, he wouldn't be anywhere near the stadium in the last match," adding that Salah's actions reflect, in his words, "clear selfishness" in what he has said recently.

Rooney did not hide the harshness of his judgment, stating that what Salah is doing "is destroying his legacy at Liverpool," expressing his regret over what he described as an imperfect way to end the player's career with the club.

He also emphasized the need for coach Arne Slot to intervene to enforce discipline, saying: "He must assert his authority and inform him that he will not travel with the team if he continues in this manner, this is unacceptable."

Rooney compared his situation to what happened previously under Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing that such situations require decisive decisions from the coach to maintain the team's stability.

Rooney concluded his remarks by pointing out that Salah is trying to justify his decline in performance this season, having scored only 12 goals in 40 matches, considering this as part of the current crisis context within Liverpool.
