Webb Defends Decision to Cancel West Ham Goal Against Arsenal

Tuesday 12-05-2026
Howard Webb, the head of the English referees' committee, defended the VAR decision to disallow the equalizing goal scored by Callum Wilson for West Ham United against Arsenal, stating that the foul committed by Pablo against goalkeeper David Raya was "clear and obvious."

Webb explained that it wasn't easy for referee Chris Kavanagh to see the incident directly due to the crowded penalty area, but the video technology intervened correctly after reviewing the replay. He said, "When you see the better angle, it becomes clear that Pablo grabbed the goalkeeper's arms and prevented him from doing his job, and this type of interference has been warned against since the beginning of the season."

Webb added that during the preparatory meetings for the season, the committee had emphasized the need to penalize any player who obstructs the goalkeeper's movement or holds his arms inside the penalty area, affirming that the incident perfectly aligns with those instructions. He also pointed out that the technology team, led by Darren England, handled the situation with great precision due to the sensitivity of the situation and its direct impact on the title race and relegation.

The review process took more than four minutes, which Webb explained by saying that the referees wanted to ensure all details were checked before making the final decision.

He concluded his remarks by affirming that the video technology ultimately succeeded in identifying the correct infraction, and that asking the referee to review the screen was the right decision in one of the most impactful moments of the season.
