Premier League Tends to Reject Expanding Video Technology Powers Next Season

Monday 11-05-2026
Premier League clubs are leaning towards rejecting the granting of additional powers to video assistant referee technology from the beginning of next season, despite new amendments approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The amendments allow the technology to intervene in calculating corner kicks and second yellow cards, to be applied in the next World Cup at the request of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

According to The Guardian, the English referees committee “PGMO” recommended not expanding the use of technology within the Premier League due to concerns about increasing match durations and the pressure on referees. The committee also believes that increased video interventions may negatively affect the viewing experience and broadcasting partners of the competition.

On the other hand, FIFA supports the application of the new amendments, as the head of the referees committee Pierluigi Collina and FIFA President Gianni Infantino believe that incorrect decisions in corner kicks or dismissals could be decisive in World Cup matches, especially in knockout stages. Additionally, the inclusion of hydration breaks in the World Cup makes the issue of increased time less bothersome compared to the Premier League.

The debate intensified after the recent West Ham United and Arsenal match, when a late goal by Callum Wilson was canceled after a video review, in a scene that could impact the title race and survival. The head referee Howard Webb is expected to explain the decision details during an analytical program this week, while West Ham intends to file an official complaint despite knowing the decision will not change.
